Monkey King: A Journey to China

at

Children’s Museum of Manhattan

In partnership with the China Institute and the Asia Society the Children’s Museum of Manhattan (CMOM) will celebrate the Asian Year of the Monkey (2004) with a dynamic, interactive exhibition, Monkey King: A Journey to China. A full schedule of creative workshops, programs and performances that will share the rich and varied culture and traditions of China with all families will enhance the exhibition.

Kids will discover the astonishing superpowers and humorous foibles of Monkey King, the unique hero of the Chinese epic Journey to the West (Xiyouji). The story of Monkey King has influenced art and culture, and been avidly shared by Chinese parents and children for generations. Now, its adaptation as an interactive exhibition will enable this timeless epic to resonate with museum visitors of all ages.

Opening on January 23rd, 2004 for six months at the

Children’s Museum of Manhattan,

The Tisch Building,

212 West 83rd Street, New York, NY 10024.

Museum public hours: Wednesday – Sunday 10am – 5pm.

At CMOM we recognize the best way to build cross-cultural understanding and mutual respect is to foster recognition, appreciation, and familiarity of another culture’s creations. Folktales have always been seen as valuable companions to textbooks in teaching history and culture to young children. By presenting Chinese culture through this authentic story, CMOM hopes to impart cultural knowledge and profound respect for China while stimulating imagination.
