Lecturer: Ross Terril is a researcher at the Fairbank Center for East Asian Research, Harvard University, and the author of Mao, Madame Mao and China in Our Time.

NYC Lit Fest 2003: Chinese Chapter

From Oct. 23 through Nov. 16 this year, the New York Literary Roundtable is organizing a "NYC Lit Fest 2003: Home" event. This first-ever literary festival in New York City offers 74 events at 48 venues in a variety of
genres and in all five boroughs. As part of the festival, the Learned (Renwen) Society at China Institute is presenting a major lecture on the theme of “home” on Saturday, November 1, 2-4 pm. The lecture will be given by the captivating speaker, Mr. Ben Wang, senior lecturer and co-chair of the Learned (Renwen) Society at China Institute. Steeped in classical Chinese literature, Mr. Ben Wang has given lectures at many universities, museums and cultural institutions in the U.S.. He recently received a distinguished citation from the City Council of New York for his outstanding contributions to the community with his literary talent. At this lecture, Mr. Wang will discuss major poems on the theme of "home" by major poets in Chinese literature, starting from Shijing (Book of Odes). A Random Talk on New Account of Tales of the World (Shi Shuo Xin Yu)

 

This classic is a collection of anecdotes of wise men, scholars, monks of Buddhist and Taoist origin, even of emperors and their concubines, written by Liu Yiqing of the fifth century. The sources for this collection are also the fountain for many novels about this time when people tried to free themselves of a stringent bureaucracy.

 

Speaker: Dr. DAI Fang is an assistant professor at the Department of Classical and Oriental Studies at Hunter College.

Book discussion with Yu Hua on his award winning book To Live

This will be the third session of the Young Associate’s book club.  As with the previous sessions, the concept is to read a book in advance and then meet with the author to have an informal discussion. To Live may be purchased at all major book stores in New York (Anchor Books, 2003). This session will be in Chinese with English translation. Yu Hua’s new novel Chronicle of a Blood Merchant will be available for purchase the night of the discussion.

Originally banned in China, Yu Hua’s novel To Live was recently named one of the last decade’s ten most influential books in his homeland, and was awarded Italy’s Grizane Cavour in 1998.  In 2002 Yu Hua became the first Chinese writer to win the prestigious James Joyce Foundation Award.  To Live was also turned into the Zhang Yimou – directed film of the same name, which won the Grand Prize at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival.

Chinatown Walk

 

Tours begin with a brief introduction to the history of Chinatown, followed by a visit to the Museum of Chinese in the Americas, the first store established in Chinatown, a supermarket stocked with Chinese sauces and spices, a tea store offering the best teas from China, a Buddhist temple, and a bookstore where you may browse and buy Chinese textbooks, dictionaries and tapes as well as calligraphy and painting supplies.  Along the way, a multitude of vegetables, fish and other food items are pointed out and explained. Tours begin in Chinatown and culminate in a Dim Sum lunch.
