Strategies for Encouraging Students to Become Self-Motivated Learners in Chinese

Effective instruction in the language classroom depends on the teacher’s ability to inspire, challenge and stimulate students.    In my presentation, I will discuss strategies which Chinese language instructors at the college level can employ to arouse student interest, develop student confidence and improve student performance.  I will focus on the following areas: instructor’s enthusiasm, course organization, students’ participation and content variety.   In my discussion, I will include research findings by educational psychologists as well as concrete examples drawn from my own experience of teaching.
