Establish a Chinese language Program to meet the needs of community

Chinese language program is a new addition to many school districts as China becomes known to be an important player in the global economy and politics. Many school districts start the program with federal grants which have particular requirements for the program. Others seek resources in the community to set up the program. Once the program is set up, the important issue is to sustain the program and make the program effective.
As advocates of the Chinese language program in American elementary schools, we see the need for our Chinese language teachers to understand the purpose of the program in each different school district and to adapt the program to suit such a purpose.  Though all language programs are geared to provide our students an opportunity to study a world language in order to become active global citizens, each school district is at different levels of understanding of the importance and needs of providing the Chinese language program and many of the districts are in the process of experimenting and researching the development of a Chinese program.  Thus to develop a such a Chinese language program, we need to be sensitive to the school districts’ understanding and purpose of the Chinese language program and create such a program to suit their needs.

Roosevelt school district is one of the new programs on Long Island. Since its launching in 2006, the program expands from one elementary school to all three elementary schools in the district and it enjoys great popularity in the community. We work very hard to incorporate the language program with the core curriculum and the culture of the community. Our effort wins the support of the principal, the staff and the community. In this presentation, we will share our experience in this aspect.
