Abstract:

Effective teaching of Chinese as a foreign language demands the capacity on the part of teachers to apply a holistic view of foreign language learning, and a processed-oriented approach to language teaching, to the moment-to-moment instructional operations. This entails a necessary and crucial objective for teacher preparation, i.e. the development of the trainee’s pedagogical capacity, which is to be characterized by two interrelated components of a FL teacher’s pedagogical competence: (1) the ability to incorporate transcultural consciousness into their prospective instructions;  (2) the ability to tailor their conceptualization of FLT methodology to the dynamic interactions in the classroom. This implies a need for many teacher education programs to make necessary adjustments in program construction, curriculum/syllabus development, instructional design, and specific procedures and tasks of the training process.
