Title:
Motivating non-heritage learners
with technology in the Chinese language classroom: Capturing student's
attention with innovative digital courseware that they love
Field Description:
This presentation will explore using
digital media as a technology learning tool to motivate non-heritage learners
to persist in their Chinese language studies beyond the “honeymoon” period.
Content:
Beginning Chinese classes tend to be
vibrant and novel. Student behavior at this stage can be characterized as
enthusiastic and focused. Unfortunately,
at the intermediate and advance level excitement begins to wane and expectation
for continued fresh and original curriculum gives way to boredom and dread of
“just another boring class” Getting the non-heritage student interested in
learning Chinese is easy. Taking them to the next level with the same degree of
motivation that they began their studies with is a frustration faced by many
Chinese teachers. This presentation
aims to share which kind of digital textbook, media, and technological tools
can stimulate a student’s motivation to continue learning Chinese beyond the
initial excitement and help eliminate teacher’s frustration.
Benefit/Goals:
Participants will discover ways
technology can be integrated into their Chinese curriculum to provide
motivation as well as instruction. They will explore how modern tools can liven
up their Chinese teaching, ease their work load, and lessen student discipline
issues related to boredom and frustration.
